Loudoun Therapeutic Riding was founded in 1974 and is dedicated to empowering, enhancing and enriching the lives of individuals with physical, cognitive or psychological challenges through the benefits of horseback riding, carriage driving or other equine assisted activities and therapies.
Throughout continuing eight-week sessions, skills are developed which address each participant’s specific challenges in areas such as balance, posture, strength, mobility, sensation, gross and fine motor functioning. The horse’s motion closely replicates the human gait as riders sit astride the horse at walk, thus helping to improve the rider’s joint mobility, balance, and core strength. For riders with cognitive or emotional disabilities, the relationships formed with the horse, staff and volunteers can lead to increased self-confidence, patience and self-esteem. Other goals include improved concentration, attention to task and functional life skills. Participants also enjoy a feeling of freedom and independence!
All instructors at LTR are PATH Intl. certified. The instructors are specially trained in teaching methods and use EAA (equine assisted activities ) to assist individuals with physical, cognitive, and mental health challenges to learn horsemanship skills and benefit from the equine environment. The emphasis of LTR programs is to provide a highly motivating experience that promotes therapeutic benefits and an overall improved quality of life in a safe and supportive environment.
VOLUNTEERS: Volunteers are the backbone of the program and act as pony handlers, side-walkers, and grooms. Volunteers also assist in many other ways including fundraising efforts. Three orientation sessions for volunteers are held each year to ensure a well-trained and efficient volunteer staff as safety is a primary consideration. Up to three volunteers may be used for one rider. Parents of riders often contribute time as volunteers. Our horses and ponies are carefully screened and trained to assure suitability. Special equipment is used if necessary for a rider to safely participate, and a PATH Intl. certified instructor is present for all activities involving riders and drivers. See our VOLUNTEER page more information on volunteer opportunities!!
